The Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF)
The GCRF provides £1.5 billion funding for research from the period of 2016 until 2021. The fund is targeted at cutting edge research which addresses the problems faced by developing countries.
The GCRF aims to:
- Address global challenges through disciplinary and interdisciplinary research;
- Strengthen capability for research and innovation, within both UK and devel-oping countries:
- Agile response to emergencies and opportunities.
Research qualifies as Overseas Development Assistance (ODA) because it covers:
- Supporting strategic objectives for UK Aid Strategy;
- Promotion of economic development and welfare of developing countries.
The GCRF is designed to strengthening pathways to impact within developing countries:
- Building research capacity and collaborations with academics in developing countries;
- Building partnerships and collaborative links with NGOs/charities/civil soci-ety in developing countries;
- Developing further collaborative opportunities to strengthen international links.

The Newton Fund
The Newton Fund uses research and innovation partnerships with countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America to promote economic development and social welfare of partner countries. It does this through collaboration with 17 partner countries and working with 15 UK delivery partners.
It does this through:
- Equitable partnerships with middle-income countries
- Multidisciplinary research based on agreed national strategies
- Nurturing talent and careers with capacity development
The Newton Fund is also part of the ODA and was launched in 2014 and now has a total UK investment of £735 million to 2021, with partner countries providing matched resources within the fund.
The Newton Prize
The Newton Prize is a £1 million fund which celebrates the best partnerships between the UK and Newton Fund countries and encourages new international collaborations to address some of the world’s most pressing challenges.
Newton Fund versus GCRF
Newton Fund
- Requires partnership with one of 17 specific partner countries, identified as emerging knowledge economies
- Partner countries provide match funding for every programme
- Primarly focused on Middle Income Countries on the OECD DAC list
GCRF
- Allows proposals addressing more widespread issues rather than requiring partnership with a specific country
- Match funding not required
- Covers any countries included on the OECD DAC list
