EU funding developments in the field of defence and security

As the new European Commission prepares to take office, escalating global tensions dominate the political agenda. Despite the €8 billion Euros European Defence Fund (EDF) allocated in 2021 to bolster European defence capabilities, significant progress is still needed for the EU to become competitive in the global defence industry. In his long-awaited report, former President of the European Central Bank (ECB) underlined these aspects by clarifying that EU funds for R&D should be “increased and concentrated on common initiatives”. He also stressed the need to increase access to private and public funding and called for “substantive incentive mechanisms” to encourage European governments to source defence capabilities from the domestic market.

The future of the European defence industry will be thoroughly discussed at the 4th European Defence & Security Conference, which will be held on 16 October 2024. Among the announced topics of discussion, the financing of EU ambitions and the reinforcement of the EU defence industry stand out to anyone who aims to actively contribute to improving the EU’s global placement within the global defence industry.
