EU-funded projects on soil restoration
A series of 21 EU-funded projects with the goal of restoring soil health across Europe by 2030 will receive a collective investment of over €170.000.000. These projects contribute to the European Green Deal objectives and the ‘A Soil Deal for Europe’ mission to achieve the following eight wider goals:
- Reduce desertification
- Conserve soil organic carbon stock
- Stop soil sealing and increase re-use of urban soils
- Reduce soil pollution and enhance restoration
- Prevent erosion
- Improve soil structure to enhance soil biodiversity
- Reduce the EU global footprint on soils
- Improve soil literacy in society
The full list of projects can be found here, yet these are the largest ones:

SpongeWorks, granted €15.3 million to enhance the water-absorption of soil.

4 projects that will establish Living Labs to improve soil health, each granted €12 million.

LILA4Soils, granted €11.6 million to build Living Labs for carbon farming.

2 projects aiming to reduce nutrient-pollution of the Mediterranean Sea, each granted €8.5 million.

MONALISA, granted €7.3 million to reverse land degradation.
The ‘A Soil Deal for Europe’ mission is one of five Missions funded Horizon Europe. It focuses on protecting as well as restoring soils and promoting sustainable management practices in urban and rural areas.
