The European Commission invests 865 million over the next four years to support fast and secure digital connectivity networks

The investment is part of the second work programme for the digital component of the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) Digital. This will provide a budget of 865 million Euro for projects targeting European digital infrastructure developments between 2024 and 2027.

With that investment, Europe aims to meet its 2030 goals of citizens and businesses having access to 5G and a gigabit connection. The budget fits into an earlier plan of two billion euros where 64 European projects have already been funded in two previous calls.

“Improving our connectivity is of strategic importance in the EU. With this second work program, we want to connect more citizens and businesses and launch more innovative connectivity infrastructure,” said Margrethe Vestager, executive vice president for A Europe Fit for the Digital Age.

The upcoming call will focus on three points. The first point is the rollout of 5G infrastructure in Europe, supporting infrastructure around standalone 5G and gigabit capabilities, along with edge cloud and computing capabilities in specific sectors such as health, manufacturing, transportation and logistics. The call will secondly address the renewing and rolling out of backbone networks. That includes undersea cables and quantum communications networks. A third area is the rollout of operational digital platforms for transportation or energy infrastructure that can integrate with existing digital infrastructure.

The call under the CEF Digital program is expected to be published soon. By then the European Commission will share more detailed information about the priorities, the submission and evaluation procedure. Any questions? Just contact us!
